Nicknames and famous highlights
History and architecture
Angkor Borei was a major city in the Mekong delta centuries before Angkor, part of the polity Chinese sources called Funan. Canals still visible on the plain linked it to the coast. Phnom Da, a rocky hill nearby, carries brick shrines of the 6th century. Statues found here, especially a form of Vishnu, define the Phnom Da style, the oldest named style in Khmer art. The small museum at Angkor Borei holds finds from the excavations. This is pre-Angkor, and it feels nothing like a Siem Reap circuit temple. A local fee applies at the museum and the hill.
