Nicknames and famous highlights
History and architecture
After Angkor was abandoned as the political center, Cambodia's kings ruled from several Mekong capitals. Oudong held the court from 1618 to 1866, through the reigns that included King Ang Duong, before Norodom moved to Phnom Penh. Phnom Udong is the pilgrimage hill above that city. The large stupas are reliquaries of former kings, rebuilt and repaired in the 20th and 21st centuries after wartime damage. It is a Buddhist site, free to walk, with a long stair and a view over the plain about 40 kilometers north of Phnom Penh. There is no Angkorian tower here.
