Nicknames and famous highlights
History and architecture
Preah Khan of Kampong Svay covers more ground than Angkor Wat or Angkor Thom. The outer enclosure is on the order of five kilometers on a side. An earlier core was expanded in the Bayon period under Jayavarman VII as a Buddhist foundation dedicated to Lokeshvara. Inside the baray and the enclosures are the pyramid of Preah Thkol, Preah Damrei, and a central sanctuary still called Bakan by local people. The region was an iron-producing district that fed Angkor. The site was heavily looted in the late 20th century. There is no standard national ticket price to publish here. Go in the dry season, on the tracks drivers actually use, with a local guide.
