History and architecture
Preah Vihear does not use the concentric temple-mountain plan. Gopuras and courtyards run for most of a kilometer along the escarpment, rising toward the sanctuary at the cliff. Work began under Yasovarman I in the 9th century and the long galleries belong mainly to Suryavarman I in the 11th, with further building under Suryavarman II. The ancient approach climbed from the north. Visitors today arrive from the Cambodian plateau. UNESCO listed the temple in 2008. The International Court of Justice awarded the temple to Cambodia in 1962. The Angkor Pass is not valid here. Pay the provincial ticket on site and allow most of a day from Siem Reap.
