Nicknames and famous highlights
History and architecture
Tradition places Wat Ounalom in the 15th century, when King Ponhea Yat moved the capital down from Angkor into the Phnom Penh region. It became the center of the Mohanikay order and the residence of the patriarch. A chedi on the grounds is venerated as a reliquary of a hair of the Buddha. The monastery was damaged during the Khmer Rouge years, when organized Buddhism was suppressed, and the buildings were restored afterward. Entry is free. It sits on Sisowath Quay, north of the Royal Palace.
