Pyramid Temples
Khmer state temples were built as mountains, a series of square terraces standing for Mount Meru. Bakong, in 881, is the first great sandstone one. Phnom Bakheng, Pre Rup, Ta Keo, and Baphuon are the Angkor versions, all on the Angkor Pass. Koh Ker's Prasat Thom is the steep seven-tier pyramid people now search for, and it is a separate $15 park about three hours from Siem Reap. The shape is Hindu cosmology, not an Egyptian import.
