History and architecture

Baphuon was the state temple-mountain of Udayadityavarman II, dedicated to Shiva around 1060, a century before Jayavarman VII enclosed it inside Angkor Thom. In the 15th or 16th century an enormous reclining Buddha was assembled from blocks on the west face. Twentieth-century conservators dismantled the pyramid to stabilize it and then lost the records during the years of war, so the rebuild became a famous jigsaw. The Buddha had to be put back as they went. The approach is a long elevated causeway across the dried moat.
