Nicknames and famous highlights

History and architecture

An inscription dates the consecration of Ta Prohm to 1186. It was a Mahayana Buddhist monastery dedicated to Prajnaparamita, the perfection of wisdom, and identified with the king's mother. The French conservators deliberately left the largest trees in place so visitors could see one Angkorian temple still bound up with the forest. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider filmed in these courtyards in 2000, which is why guides call it the Tomb Raider temple. A small weathered relief on a gallery pillar is popularly called a stegosaurus. It is a damaged carving, not evidence of dinosaurs.
