History and architecture

Angkor Thom, the Great City, replaced the earlier Yasodharapura as the royal capital in the late 12th century. Earth walls and a moat form a square of roughly three kilometers on each side, with five gates. Each gate tower carries faces, and each causeway is a row of gods and asuras holding a naga, a composition tied to the Churning of the Ocean myth. Inside the walls are Bayon, Baphuon, the royal palace, Phimeanakas, and the Elephant Terrace. Those inner monuments are listed separately; this record is the city itself, above all the gates and walls.
