History and architecture

Wat Thmei is a living Theravada pagoda on the north side of Siem Reap. The structure visitors come for is the memorial stupa built in the 1990s after human remains were recovered from pits on and near the grounds. It is a local place of remembrance, smaller and quieter than Choeung Ek outside Phnom Penh, and it is not an Angkorian monument. Entry is free. Dress modestly and do not treat the stupa as a photo backdrop.
