History and architecture

Pre Rup was dedicated in 961 to Shiva as the state temple of Rajendravarman II, who had brought the capital back to Angkor from Koh Ker. The name means turn the body and is tied to cremation rites. The lowest stages are laterite, the upper towers brick, with sandstone doorframes and lintels. It is the model for the later temple-mountains and the eastern stop on the Grand Circuit. The upper terrace stays open later than the inner temples so people can watch the sun drop over the plain.
