History and architecture

Beng Mealea follows the ground plan of Angkor Wat — galleries, libraries, and a central sanctuary — but it was built on one level and was never cleared and rebuilt in the same way. Inscriptions are scarce, so the link to Suryavarman II and a Vishnu dedication is inferred from the style and the plan. Wooden walkways now carry visitors over the collapsed corridors. Angkor Enterprise lists it as its own one-day ticket, separate from the Angkor Pass. Carry cash and ask at the booth, because local advice about whether a valid pass is accepted has not been consistent.
