History and architecture

Banteay Kdei was built in the Bayon style at the end of the 12th century, one of the monasteries Jayavarman VII scattered around the capital. The sandstone is softer here than at Angkor Wat, and much of the gallery has slumped. Face towers and devata figures still stand on the better-preserved gates. The usual reading of the name is Citadel of the Chambers, or cells, which fits a monastery plan. It shares the Small Circuit stop with Srah Srang, whose landing stage faces the temple.
