History and architecture

Bakong was dedicated to Shiva in 881 by Indravarman I at Hariharalaya, the capital before Yasovarman I moved the court to Phnom Bakheng. The stepped pyramid, moat, and enclosure are the pattern later temples enlarge. The central tower visitors climb is a later rebuild, but the stages, lions, and elephants at the corners are of the original reign. Preah Ko and Lolei, the other Roluos temples, stand nearby and are covered by the same Angkor Pass. This listing is Bakong, the one most visitors walk.
