History and architecture

Banteay Samre belongs to the early 12th century and the reign of Suryavarman II. The complete concentric galleries and the quality of the pediments place it with Angkor Wat rather than with the later Buddhist monasteries. The name refers to the Samre people, who lived in the region. It was restored by anastylosis, stone by stone, so the courtyards read clearly even though the temple is far from the main park loop. A later Buddhist vihara stood nearby. The Angkor Pass covers it.
