History and architecture

The Terrace of the Elephants was the facade of the royal palace enclosure, where the king appeared for processions and reviews. It belongs to Jayavarman VII's building of Angkor Thom at the end of the 12th century, with later additions. The wall is carved in registers of elephants, hunters, and a five-headed horse. It is architecture of the court, not a shrine with a deity image, which is why there is no primary deity. The Terrace of the Leper King continues the platform at the north end. Both are inside the Angkor Pass.
