History and architecture

Wat Preah Prom Rath is the monastery on the west bank in the middle of Siem Reap, a short walk from the Old Market. The buildings visitors see are modern Theravada architecture on a much older monastic site. Inside and around the vihara are a reclining Buddha and colorful tellings of the Reamker. It is an active monastery, free to enter, and a better introduction to present-day Khmer Buddhism than any ruin in the park. Shoes come off, shoulders stay covered, and monks should not be posed for photos without a clear yes.
